Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board Supports Great American Milk Drive

4/30/2014
MADISON, WI – The gallon of milk you consider a staple in your refrigerator is missing in many Wisconsin food banks and food banks across America.

The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB) is encouraging Wisconsin residents to get involved with the Great American Milk Drive – the first-ever program that delivers the opportunity to purchase milk for hungry families. The Great American Milk Drive was created by the nation's milk processors and National Dairy Council partnering with Feeding America, the leading domestic hunger-relief charity. All donations made by Wisconsin residents will stay within the state and are shared with food banks in zip codes linked to where the donation is made.

Hunger can be an invisible issue, but it's happening in our communities. It's a problem that impacts 1 in 6 Americans, including more than 724,000 families in Wisconsin. These include children who don't have dependable, consistent access to enough food due to their family's limited resources. These are kids who are not only going hungry, but they're also missing out on the nourishment they need to reach their full potential.

Food banks can't meet the demand because milk is rarely donated - most contributions include canned goods and other non-perishable items. Feeding America and Second Harvest food banks receive the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year.

With a simple click of a mouse (www.milklife.com/give) or text message (text MILK to 27722) it is now possible to buy much-needed milk and donate it for as little as $5.00. Every dollar collected will go to purchase and deliver fresh, nutritious milk.

It's a big idea, and WMMB is excited to share the initiative and make a difference in the lives of hungry Wisconsin families. For more information about the initiative, or to make a donation, visit MilkLife.com/give
