Fuel Up to Play 60 Super Bowl Breakfast Recipe Contest Winners Announced

3/2/2017

Madison, Wis. - Six Wisconsin schools were selected as winners of the Fuel Up to Play 60 Super Bowl Recipe Contest. Winning schools are Hemlock Creek EL, West De Pere; Hudson MS; Thorsen EL, Cedarburg; Elkhorn MS; Hackett EL, Beloit; Howe EL, WI Rapids. The contest had 109 entries from 32 schools and was sponsored by Wisconsin's Dairy Farm Families through Fuel Up to Play 60.

Each school will receive $300 to plan a school breakfast celebration and some schools will have June Holstein as their special breakfast guest. Breakfast celebrations are scheduled in March to coordinate with National School Breakfast Week and National Nutrition Month. Fuel Up to Play 60 breakfast celebrations include:

  • Friday, March 3rd - Hackett Elementary School, Beloit
  • Monday, March 6th - Thorsen Elementary, Cedarburg
  • Wednesday, March 8th - Hemlock Creek Elementary, West De Pere
  • Thursday, March 9th - Howe Elementary, Wisconsin Rapids
  • Thursday, March 9th - Elkhorn Middle School
  • Friday, March 17th - Hudson Middle School

"The Super Bowl Breakfast Recipe contest was developed as part of Fuel Up to Play 60 program to highlight healthy breakfast foods for students," explains Laura Wilford, Director, Wisconsin Dairy Council. "All entries had to include milk, cheese or yogurt, which are an essential part of school breakfast meals to provide the protein and calcium that students need to fuel their day."

Breakfast is often described as the most important meal of the day because it provides important daily nutrients such as protein, fiber, calcium and carbohydrates. Research shows that children who eat breakfast show an increased ability to learn, better academic performance and may have a decreased risk of being overweight.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is sponsored locally by the Wisconsin Dairy Council, the nutrition education department of the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, a nonprofit organization funded by the state's dairy farmers, that promotes the consumption of Wisconsin dairy products.
